Protein Modeling is an event developed by the CBM for Science Olympiad. This event challenges students to explore protein structure/function by creating 3-dimensional models of proteins using Mini-Toobers, foam-covered wire that will hold its shape once folded.

We are pleased to acknowledge our several partners who make this Protein Modeling event possible. This year’s event is a formal collaboration between the Center for BioMolecular Modeling and the Protein Data Bank at Rutgers. The event is supported by a grant from National Institutes of Health's SEPA (Science Education Partnership Award) program. 3D Molecular Designs provides materials for this event, at cost – and handles the packaging and distribution of kits to teams and tournament directors.

2018-19 Event Resources
The 2018-19 Science Olympiad Protein Modeling Event focused on the bacterial adaptive immunity system CRISPR, the Cas9 protein, and anti-CRISPR proteins.

2017-18 Event Resources
The 2017-18 Science Olympiad Protein Modeling Event focused on influenza and the key virus surface proteins that are responsible for helping the virus enter the host cell. The event also covered a history of the influenza virus as well as an overview of the virus structure.

The 2016-17 Science Olympiad Protein Modeling Event focused on the Beery Twins and the proteins involved in the biosynthesis and subsequent signaling of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin.

The 2015-16 Science Olympiad Protein Modeling Event focused on the genome editing proteins Zinc Finger Nuclease, TALE Nuclease and CRISPR, and the amazing diseases they are being engineered to fix.

The 2012-13 Science Olympiad Protein Modeling Event focused on Nic Volker, an incredibly resilient little boy and a team of physicians and researchers who searched for an explanation for his mysterious bowel disease.

2011-12 Event Resources
The 2011-12 Science Olympiad Protein Modeling Event focused on stem cells and the advancements made in reverting adult cells back into pluripotent stem cells by introducing several key proteins, including C-Myc, Sox-2, Oct-4 and Klf-4.
