Jmol Console

X Open a New Molecular Structure

A molecular structure file includes the X, Y, and Z coordinates to position each atom in molecule in 3D space. The buttons below will load structure files in the Jmol window to the right.

To learn more about SMILES sequences or PDB files, how to find them, and how to load them into the Jmol User Design Environment, visit our Jmol Training Guide.

If your design requires a non-public or custom PDB structure file, we recommend using the local (non-online) Java-based version of Jmol, available to download here. Learn more about using the Java-based version of Jmol with the Jmol Training Guide

X Save Your Design

.SPT Files will let you reload your design into this environment at a later time.

.JPG Files will let you put an image of your design in PowerPoint, Word, etc.

.STL Files will let you 3D print a physical model of your design.

History .TXT Files will let you save a list - or history - of all of the commands you have entered.

Note that STL files exported for 3D printing can be quite large. If your browser freezes or you receive an error when attempting to export an STL file, visit the Jmol Training Guide for trouble-shooting options.

For a complete guide to 3D Printing molecular models using Jmol and 3D printers, visit the 3D Printing Your Design section of the CBM's Jmol Training Guide.

X Reload a Previous Design

Jmol designs that have been saved as .SPT files can be reloaded by simply dragging and droping your .SPT file directly into the Jmol window to the right. Note, it may take a moment to load the molecular coordinates.

Note that this same drag-and-drop technique can be used to load designs created with this Jmol User Design Environment into the Java-based version of Jmol. To learn more about reloading your work, visit the Jmol Training Guide.

X 3D Print Your Design

Jmol can export .STL Files that will let you 3D print a physical model of your design.

Note that STL files exported for 3D printing can be quite large. If your browser freezes or you receive an error when attempting to export an STL file, visit the Jmol Training Guide for trouble-shooting options.
